Bloody Maries are the staple weekend brunch drink and the ultimate hangover drink. But did you realise just how good they actually are for you?
Think about the actual ingredients of a Bloody Mary: tomatoes, Tabasco hot sauce, celery, and horseradish. Each ingredient is packed with vitamins and antioxidants. Much healthier than a Rum and Coke!
While tomato juice might have fairly high sodium content, tomatoes are filled with lycopene, an important antioxidant which fights against cancerous cell formation.
Horseradish is one of those quiet achievers, working hard without the praise it deserves. Stuffed with glucosinolates which increase the liver’s ability to detoxify carcinogens and can suppress the growth of existing tumours. The next best source of this goodness is broccoli – Doctors actually recommend people take a ¼ of a teaspoon of horseradish daily! Seriously!
Let’s not forget the Tabasco full of vitamin C and capsaicin which raises the body’s temperature, thus helps TO BURN calories after you’ve eaten! Did you know that a single chilli pepper can contain four times the amount of vitamin C as an orange? No? Well now you do!
And then, there’s the crunchy celery stick which just feels healthy to eat thanks to those supermodels who claim to survive on them because they help you to burn calories by speeding up your metabolism! Celery is also loaded with phytochemicals, which is said to reduce the risk of several types of cancer, cardiac disease and diabetes as well as lowering elevated blood pressure. It’s stems are used as a treatment for urinal retention, hypertension and even some sexual conditions, too!
So, get rid of the guilt the next time you order one (or three) and remember, your body NEEDS it! 🙂 Everything in moderation of course…
