Wellness: Home Remedies for Indigestion

Wellness: Rich and flavourful Christmas foods are the highlight of the festivities, however for those of us who suffer from Indigestion, unfortunately can also lead to pain and discomfort for hours after.

There are many over-the-counter antacids you can buy which go some way to easing your discomfort, however, there are also a few really good home remedies which can help just as well and cost you very little or nothing!

Remember always to check with your doctor first before trying home cures, just in case your symptoms point to something other than indigestion or incase you might be allergic. However, if you’re sure, then check these out

Did you know that Alka Seltza is just baking soda with paracetamol? I have relied on Alka Seltza as the only cure for my hangover in the past but then tried baking soda and voila! It did exactly the same job!  Drink a glass of warm water with 1 or 2 tsp of baking soda mixed in. If you have lemons, use a tsp of lemon juice too. This will neutralise the pain in your stomach without fail. This is for those moments when you have nothing else to hand. Don’t rely on this remedy only as in the long term, baking soda might be bad for your stomach, depending on your symptoms.

Many cultures use tea to help with digestion. Mint leaves in warm water will help the indigestion to dissipate. Drink it slowly, without sugar. Make sure you brew the tea for at least 10 minutes.

This mix is said to help heartburn, extra gas and indigestion. Combine star anise, dll, fennel and caraway seeds together in 1tsp portions. Onve you have mixed them up, chew half a tsp of the mix very  slowly for 10 minutes or so. The combination of properties will trickle through your digestive system and help to dissolve the feeling of indigestion.
