Natural Sleep Aids

Natural Sleep Aids

Sometimes, when sleep evades, the easiest place to turn is to the doctor or the pharmacist. We point out four natural sleep aid alternatives below.

As we’re seeing recently, we’re becoming hooked on pharmaceutical drugs which are losing their potency as a result of over-usage. We all know that nature has provided us with the best of everything, but with our busy lives, it can prove fairly difficult to find her hidden goodies, so we’ve found them for you.

Magnesium and calcium

Did you know that both of these minerals are also sleep boosters? And apparently if you take them together, they become twice as powerful doing their thing! Magnesium is actually calcium’s best friend. You should always take magnesium to cancel out any potential heart concerns that may arise from taking calcium on it own. For sleep problems, take 200 milligrams of magnesium, (lower the dose if it causes diarrhoea)with 600 milligrams of calcium each night.

Wild lettuce

Now this surprised me! Who knew the inconspicuous wild lettuce was so powerful? Apparently this vegetable has been used for years to treat anxiety, headaches, and muscle or joint pain. But it also has effective calming properties which could quell your restlessness at night or even restless legs syndrome, if you suffer from it. The recommended dosage is 30 to 120 milligrams before bed.

Hops

Now before you go stocking up on Stella Artois, remember it’s not any old beer but the female flowers used in the beer making. Whilst we all know that a few beers can aid a deep sleep, albeit comes with a fat head in the morning. However for solely sleeping purposes, anxiety and insomnia, take the extract, 30 to 120 milligrams before hitting the hay sack.

Valerian

Now, if you suffer from sleep issues, you know that Valerian is one of the first herbs people will suggest. And if you’ve tried the tea, you will think – ‘pah, it couldn’t put a koala to sleep,’ however there have been numerous studies which found that valerian really can enhance sleep, improve deep sleep and also the speed at which you fall asleep. Have you tried the extract in pill form? You can take between 200 to 800 milligrams and it’s sure to get you zzzzing in no time.

As with all natural remedies, it’s always best to check you can use them with your doctor if you are taking any other medication as some natural remedies can affect pharmaceutical treatments.
