Planetfem has been looking at natural antibiotics for non-serious infections this week, as a healthier alternative to running for a prescription from the doctor. Nature has given us all we need to help ourselves, we just need to know where to look!
If you feel the start of A URINARY TRACT INFECTION coming on:
Buy some nettle leaf tincture from the herbalist or health food shop. Nettle is a well-known remedy for UTIs because it acts like a diuretic and helps to flush out the bacteria from the bladder, keeping it away from the kidneys where it becomes more serious. Nettle contains chlorophyll which is anti-inflammatory, so helps to abate the inflammation in the urinary tract, making it less painful.
An oldie but goodie for a reason: Drink unsweetened cranberry or blueberry juice: Both have anthocyanidins which help to prevent the bacteria which is the cause of most UTIs in the urinary tract.
Drink Plantain Seed Tea: Plantain seeds have high mucilage content so are can be used to treat constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and UTIs. Simply pour a cup of boiling water over 1 teaspoon of plantain seeds. Wait for it to cool and drink before bed or two to three times during the day if the infection is a few days in. It will reduce inflammation in the bladder, making it more difficult for the bacteria to grow. Like nettle, plantain seeds are also a diuretic, which will help to stop the bacteria from moving to the kidneys or the blood.
Some herbs and natural remedies can affect different types of medication negatively. Therefore, as with all natural remedies, please make sure that if you are taking such regular medication, you must check with your doctor or health practitioner first to make sure there is no conflict.
