Life can make us think negatively sometimes. Those thoughts sink in and linger in our minds until we take action to get rid of them (a friend of mine calls it ‘neg spray’ time!). Learning how to clear your mind and thoughts isn’t easy.
Once we start on a negative tip, most of us will try and simply force those thoughts out of our head. Try hard to stop thinking them and think about something else instead.
But this approach often backfires. According to research, resisting negative thoughts can actually reinforce the thinking pattern and just make the thoughts worse. Think about it: the more you try not to think about or want something, the more you actually end up thinking about it or wanting it.
Here are some better techniques which DO work to get rid of those debilitating negative thoughts once and for all;
It’s Good To Talk
Sometimes negative thoughts occurs when your life isn’t going as well as you might like have issues or emotions you need to get out.
Bottling these thoughts and feelings up do not help you to deal with them. Sometimes If you have something that needs to be addressed, you should talk through them with someone.
Putting things into words gives your thoughts shape and form. That can help you put things into perspective so you can get to the root of the problem and deal with them there.
Change The Tone
Sometimes it can be as easy as changing perspective, though at first this may sound hard to do- after all, our opinions are fully thought-out, researched and on-point, right? Not all the time! We are not always right and sometimes, it’s necessary to listen to those offending or opposite points of view that are causing the negative thoughts and try to learn something from their perspective. It works the same for us! When you’re thinking negatively about yourself, try to shift the perspective:
For example, instead of thinking, “My life is rubbish, I hate myself” try to think “I’m facing some challenges at the moment, but I’m working going to work to find solutions. There MUST be a solution.”
Positive spin brings positive results – just ask any politician!
An Oldie, But A Goodie: GRATITUDE
Sometimes this really annoys me as when I’m feeling negative on life or on myself, I really don’t want to come out of it. But deep down I know that negativity has such a detrimental effect on our health, and it’s so unnecessary and I KNOW this technique works! Sometimes in the daily grind of life, we forget all the good things we’ve got in our lives, all the good people, the good fortune and the times when things went well in our lives. Refocus! List everything you’re grateful for, no matter how small they are: a roof over your head, a job rather than on the dole, a family, friends. love, health, compliments people have paid you ( pay them to yourself!), achievements, charity you’ve done, love you’ve given (regardless if you’ve got it back- you’re lovely for giving it in the first place!)
Remember how short life can be. Those we’ve lost who would love to be here now. Do not take life or love or people for granted. Learn how to clear your mind using these techniques. Sometimes our lives are overflowing with goodness, yet we are blind to them because of a few negative things! How ridiculous!
Enjoy a more positive life: word!
