Delicious Recipes: Beat The Blues Smoothie

The winter blues are dragging on now. The dull, grey days and colder nights just won’t go away, boo. Over it. If, like us, you need some sunshine, then try another of our delicious recipes: sunshine in a glass to boost your mood.

This smoothie is called ‘Beat The Blues’ and it seriously does what it says on the tin(well, glass).

Packed with brain-boosting blueberries and blackberries, it also contains raw cashew butter which you can get from any reputable health food shop or decent market/supermarket.

Cashew butter is fabulous because it is rich in tryptophan which is a natural anti-depressant – exactly the mood-lifter you need.

Add to this magic mix avocado, which contains vitamin B-6, a deficiency of which is often associated with depression. And as if that wasn’t enough; evidence featured in the 2007 issue of “Primary Psychiatry” notes that many antidepressants boost dopamine — known as the ‘feel-good’ brain chemical, in the body as it improves mood. Well, your common, every day avocado is full of protein and apparently protein snacks trigger dopamine release so that’s a winner!

Then there’s the banana: full of tryptophan which releases serotonin (another happy chemical in the brain).

coconut milk give your the brain boost you need too. Coconuts are highly nutritious, rich in fibre, vitamins C, E, B1, B3, B5 and B6 and minerals including iron, selenium, sodium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorous..

Trust us, you’ll be flying to the moon and dancing amongst the stars after this magic mix. And if not, at least you’ll be happy, feet firmly on the ground!

Ingredients: simply bung them all in a mixer!

  • 6 oz Vanilla Coconut Milk
  • 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/4 cup frozen blackberries
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1/2 Avocado
  • 1 tbs raw cashew butter
