Why Cucumber Is The Best

Why Cucumber Is The Best

For some the cucumber is a watery, tasteless vegetable which sits pointlessly in the way of your cheese fix. For those in the know though, the cucumber is the most undervalued health-busting vegetable, it goes with anything, is packed full of vitamins and is easy to eat!

Here are some surprising reasons as to why cucumber is the best vegetable ever.

Cucumbers is 95% water! Which means eating it can help you to stay hydrated and can top p your daily water consumption!

Cucumber is packed full of an endless list of the main vitamins and minerals the body needs: vitamin K, B and C, copper, potassium and manganese too. Cucumber also contains polyphenols which are said to reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Cucumbers protect your brain as they contain anti-inflammatory flavonol, fisetin and this is needed for optimum brain health and memory. It even protects your nerve cells from ageing and it has been suggested that it can play a role in the prevention of progressive memory and learning impairments in mice with Alzheimer’s disease.

Cucumbers reduce your risk of Cancer: Remember those polyphenols from earlier? Well, cucumber contains a type called lignans (pinoresinol, lariciresinol, and secoisolariciresinol), and these are said to help lower the risk of breast, uterine, ovarian, and prostate cancers.

Cucumber helps you to maintain a healthy weight as it is low in calories, but has soluble fibre which dissolves into a gel-like texture in your gut, thus helping to slow down digestion, which in turn helps you to feel full longer.

Get the picture? The shy and unassuming cucumber is so inoffensive, I’m always surprised when people say they don’t like it! It’s astounding it has so many helpful properties, but it does! It has many more I haven’t mentioned like the fact it’s anti-inflammatory, helps with digestion and helps to lower cholesterol.

Need I say more? I bet I can guess what you’ll be having in your sandwiches for lunch this week!
